Key Biscayne Charter High School and Lifelong Learning Center

Update on Consultants' Feasibility Report.                                 January 14, 2009

Feasibility report for proposed charter high school was presented yesterday by the Village Manager to Council, and is now available for download. You can watch a brief video of the presentation.

The comprehensive feasibility report brings light to the many questions the community may have as to the potential of establishing a world-class charter high school in our community. In addition, it highlights the multiple social and economic benefits the school and the lifelong learning center would bring to the entire community.

We are analyzing the report and have begun to update our website, mainly the "Frequent Q&A" page. Please check the website frequently as information will be regularly updated.

"Nuts and bolts"

Location and cost are perhaps the two most often asked questions when it comes to the school. The report confirms we have locations to locate the 25,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility, and the cost can be funded by taxes we already pay to Miami-Dade County - coming back to our community - complemented with private contributions.

Facility and possible locations: Multi-purpose facility of 25,000 sq. ft. for up to 400 students. Village Hall reconfiguration or 530 Crandon Blvd. included as recommended sites. Facility to be used as a Lifelong Learning Center 365 days a year by the entire community. See details in the Q&A section of our website Where? or pages 21 - 24 of report.

Cost estimates: The feasibility report shows the Village Hall option would be self financed, with a potential $707,848 surplus in the first 5 years for cushioning and reserves. 530 Crandon Blvd. option shows a 5 years deficit of about $353,447. See details in Q&A How? or pages 54 - 56 of report.

What are the next steps?
We'll schedule town hall meetings with the community to discuss consultants recommendations and get feedback from as many residents as possible. First meeting has been scheduled for January 20 (see below), and other meetings will follow.

We would also expect for the Village Council to schedule a workshop with the consultants as soon as possible and to agree on what the next steps will be.

Information will be posted in this website as it becomes available.

Make the charter high school and community learning center a reality

Proposed school and lifelong learning center will benefit the entire community - not just some parents with children. Consultants report highlights many of these benefits, both social and economic.

We encourage you to learn about the proposed initiative by browsing this website, to participate in town hall meetings, and to let us know how we can jointly overcome potential objections or fears so we can continue enhancing the value proposition of the initiative. And, if you agree with the proposed school and lifelong learning center, please subscribe to the initiative and actively support it.

Thank you.
