Best Practices in Education and Facilities Design

for the 21st Century—Workshop

The workshop, sponsored by The Key Biscayne Education Foundation had a tremendous turnout. In spite of having given only 6 days notice, being a religious holiday and school vacation time for many of us, over 90 residents, including educators, parents, business and community leaders actively participated at this event.

The workshop was conducted by Prakash Nair, President and Principal of Fielding Nair International, one of the world’s leading change agents in innovative school planning and design.

The event centered on analyzing the gap that exists between today's traditional education models and 21st century education needs, and on innovative education facilities planning and design principles supporting excellence and contemporary education models.

The audience also participated in an exercise to express their “hopes” and “fears” on the implementation of a 21st Century High School in Key Biscayne.  Results of this exercise will be made available in the next newsletter and our website www.hs4kb.com.

We thank the Key Biscayne Education Foundation for bringing  this world-class visionary to our community, and opening our eyes to the 21st century education model.

Key Biscayne — Charter School Consulting update

Response by interested consultants to the Request for Quotation (RFQ) was due on March 17th.  A citizens committee is presently evaluating proposals, with final recommendations scheduled to be made by our Village Manager to Council  at the April 8th Council meeting.

The objective of RFQ is to select a consulting firm to educate the community on the mechanics of how a municipal charter school operates, as well as to provide a detailed facilities requirement with an emphasis on Small Learning Communities.

Consulting engagement is expected to last for 10 weeks, and all community members are encourage to participate in the process to assure we get a good understanding of the world-class school we can have right here, in our community.

Upcoming events

· Council meeting. April 1, 7:00 PM. Council Chambers. We are requesting an update from our Village Manager on status of his conversations with Miami-Dade County Public Schools related to our January 29 request to Council of jointly pursuing a cooperation agreement between the Village and M-DCPS. The agreement (or Compact) will be addressing Key Biscayne K-8 Center old elementary buildings and seeking ways to enhance curriculum at our middle school and potential use by the community of certain school facilities.

Village Manager has maintained conversations with M-DCPS in which our HS4KB Group has not been invited to participate.  We must ensure the process is driven by our group, with Village Manager as a facilitator.

· Council meeting. April 8, 7:00 PM. Council Chambers. Village Manager to present his recommendation to Mayor and Council members as to the consulting firm to be hired to perform charter school project. Consultant’s outcome should be focused on getting a good understanding of how we can get a world-class community high school implemented in our Village, promoting sharing of existing  and mix-use facilities.   For that purpose we, as community, will need to actively participate in identifying our needs and desires for this world-class innovative school.

· HS4KB initiative, community update meeting.  April 9, 2008.  7:00 PM.  Community Room on lower floor of Village Hall.   Agenda to be made available by April 3.
