 Minutes of 03/26/09 Meeting:

Attendance: Members - CV, MM, GC, JKP, JK, MCT, MF            Other – Angel Martin   

 1.     Minutes of 03/19/2009 meeting approved

2.     High Level School Model Proposals and Discussion – Changed suggested daily afternoon sessions to Enrichment Electives and added community service learning. Some electives could be taken as extracurricular supplements, intergenerational supplements or as self directed courses. Discussed difficulties attempting to organize AP and IB courses simultaneously as a start-up school, and scheduling and resource issues.   Discussed school starting time and pros and cons to a 7:30 am start as well as other starting times. No consensus or decision taken by the group on this issue.

3.     Potential School Academies – Agreed as a group that one of the Academies should focus on Marine and/or Environmental Science because of the geographical placement of the school and because of the partnerships that could be developed with the RSMAS/UM, NOAA and other local science and environmental organizations. MF to review and propose possible Marine and Environmental Science academy strands and courses that could be offered.

4.     School Mission and Goals – Postponed. MM to develop mission and goals for further review by the group.  

5.     Scheduling professional and community forums - Postponed

6.     Other Issues – Discussed the confirmation that the Montessori school in Ohio obtained a waiver to start an IB program for the 100 student school in 1 ½ years from the submittal of a letter of intent. Discussed the integration of intergenerational learning in the school model. Discussed possible group meeting with Chip Iglesias after Spring Break.
