Minutes of 03/12/2009 meeting approved 2. High Level School Model Proposals and Discussion – Various information on secondary school college preparatory models was provided to the group, including IB, AP and secondary school reform course sequence models. Additionally, AP courses offered by the College Board and Virtual courses offered by the Florida Virtual School Program were reviewed. Information on M-DCPS High School Academies was provided. Reviewed a proposed KBHS Program and Sequence chart that was concentrated on providing extensive AP course offerings. The proposal offered Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language and 1 Academy Course as a required part of the curriculum. Project Based Learning was part of the model as a delivery method for a selection of 2 additional course offerings each day. Virtual school, dual enrollment, sports training, science studies, music, art, dance, theatre, internships, mentoring, apprenticeships and various project alternatives could be part of the options for these project based learning daily sessions. Reviewed a draft high school framework scope and sequence proposing a school mission with learning and innovations skills, goals and sample course offerings. Discussed symposiums, cycle of learning, bloom’s taxonomy and a sequence model at Suncoast Polytechnical High School in Sarasota. 3. Other Issues – Discussed limitations of a start-up school to offer the International Baccalaureate program until the school is established and also the application process being a 2 to 2½ year endeavor. Attempting to gather more information on this subject from another school on waivers that may be granted. Briefly discussed the initial survey responses and the feedback towards a hybrid delivery model. By consensus the group does not envision a full project based learning model being an alternative for the school, although a component of this delivery method can and will be integrated into the school model in separate offered sessions or as the delivery tool for some core curriculum classes. |
