Key Biscayne Population in High School Age

In the absence of a Census, the most accurate way of determining the Key Biscayne youth population in high school age would be based on the number of children graduating each year from public and private middle schools and projecting this number over 4 years as it would be expected for these children to continue on to public or private high schools and enroll for the 4 years of high school. Based on available information and community sentiment, we can estimate the number of Key Biscayne children in high school age somewhere in the 808 to 936 range, or an average of 872.

The following 2 scenarios were considered in estimating Key Biscayne youth population in high school age.

Scenario 1. It accounts for factual data of Key Biscayne resident children graduating from 8^th grade at M-DCPS public schools and best estimations on Key Biscayne resident children graduating from 8^th grade at private schools within Miami-Dade County. 

Children from public schools: Based on data provided by Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) the middle school grade have an average of 117 Key Biscayne Children (residents of 33149) graduating each year from M-DCPS public middle schools. It would be expected these children graduating from 8^th grade from public middle schools each year would enroll at either public or private schools, suggesting a population of 468 Key Biscayne children in high school age coming from the public school system.

Children from private schools: A significant number of private middle schools are attended by Key Biscayne Children in their middle years but no hard data is available as to exactly how many children graduate from these private middle schools each year. However, a conservative number of 85 children can be estimated based on feedback from parents of children and children attending these schools. Estimate breakdown is as follows: Belen (6), Carrollton (10), Cushman (2), Gulliver (12); International School (9), Miami Country Dade (4); Palmer Trinity (3), Ransom Everglades (12) and St. Agnes (27).

Based on this scenario, the number of  Key Biscayne residents in high school age can estimated at 808  ((117+85) x 4).

Scenario 2.- It accounts for factual data of Key Biscayne resident children graduating from 8^th grade at M-DCPS public schools and sentiment of some Key Biscayne residents that the great majority of Key Biscayne parents send their children to private schools.

In addition to the 117 children graduating each year from the middle public school system, as described in scenario 1, there is anecdotal information based on the various meetings and workshops we (the consultants) have conducted that leads us to conclude that a majority of Key Biscayne residents choose to send their children to private schools. However, even if only half the number of middle school graduates from key Biscayne went to private schools, it would indicate that at least an additional 117 children graduate from private schools each year. That would bring the total number of Key Biscayne children graduating from public and private middle schools at 234 which, in turn suggests that the Key Biscayne population of children of high school age totals about 936.
